White Paper

Justifying High Technology in the Precision Machine Shop

In the ongoing battle for survival and profitability in the precision parts production business, the latest CNC technology is more important than ever. It allows shops to do more in one operation with less direct labor, produces more consistent, higher quality parts and helps reduce the cost per piece produced.

Still, some shops, accustomed to the ‘way they’ve always done it’ may feel old technology will see them through. It won’t. At least not in this global market. The need to understand how to profitably invest in CNC is urgent—if you want to be competitive. Buying new technology is a strategic decision to assure the future competitiveness of your company.

ITMS2010
So much to see, so much to learn.

At IMTS 2010 in Chicago, INDEX Corporation will bring several new machine concepts to North America for the first time.

Here are the highlights:

A new, affordable multispindle CNC, a Swiss machine quickly convertible to a production machine, and a turning/milling center that can do 5-axis work on both spindles simultaneously will be the stars of our show.

The machines will show how INDEX TRAUB is taking done-in-one precision machining and cycle time reduction to new levels for the precision parts industry.

Make plans to visit us with an appointment with one of our staff for a personal tour of the new technology

New multispindle from the leader
in multis - at IMTS!

The new MS40 is where affordability meets productivity, flexibility and reliability.

The MS40C is quicker, more precise, and more energy efficient than competitive machines for nearly unlimited operations on bar up to 40mm (1.57 in.) diameter or for chucking up to 120mm (4.7 in.).

Six fully independent liquid-cooled, hollow-shaft CNC spindle drives are each capable of up to 7000 rpm. And two tool slides approach each spindle, permitting two tools to be simultaneously in the cut on each part.
  • Up to 62 axes
  • 12 identical CNC tool carriers with 1 or 2 axes
  • One or two 10,000-rpm synchronized spindles
with 150 mm travel in Z
  • Up to six tools for backworking
It even has better access to the work area and better chip control than other multis.

Looking for the productivity of a multi? Look into which machine line has the innovation, reputation and reliability you need to keep production moving.

Investment Pays Off for Contract Shop

Wiscon Products, Inc., Racine, Wisconsin, founded in 1945, is a family-owned and operated contract precision machining job shop that is aggressively investing in high-capability equipment. “We’ve just had five years’ of growth and during that time we’ve invested over 30% of our total sales in new equipment,” said Torben Christensen, third generation. With a highly skilled workforce averaging more than 15 years with Wiscon, the company produces a range of flat and shaft type parts such as hydraulic components, powered hand tools parts, oil field parts and even theatre staging components.

“Being competitive in these days is essential, yet more difficult,” Torben said. “Customer parts are more complex with tighter tolerances. They also want cost-effective analysis and competitive pricing.”

One of its customers came to them with what seemed like a normal request...
